Dance Classes
Preschool Movement (Thursday & Saturday 3-4yrs)

This movement class will introduce students to a class setting, dance movement & body positioning, in a fun environment. They will learn rhythmic coordination, dance movements and how to keep a steady beat. The teacher will incorporate props & music into routines to enhance a student's use of listening & motor skills. Clothing: Comfortable pants & top that allow freedom of movement & non-marking (not worn outside of class) sneakers.

Kindergarten Ballet (4-5 yrs)

This is a class for young dancers interested in exploring the fundamentals of ballet. Students will get an introduction to commonly used ballet terms, and will also practice the basic positions, good turnout, and proper posture. Students in this class are strongly encouraged to wear proper dance attire as they make elements of the class more comfortable, and are great at preventing slips and falls. Clothing: Leotard, dance tights and ballet slippers. Skirt or shorts may be worn over tights.

Beginning Ballet (6-8 & 9-12 yrs)

Exposes dancers to the building blocks of ballet. The basics of posture, turnout, and movement will be the focus of this class, as well as an introduction to the terminology commonly used in ballet. Beginning ballet also helps students learn to express their creativity through dance and understand the connection between music and movement. Clothing: Leotard, dance tights and ballet slippers. Skirt or shorts may be worn over tights.

Ballet I (6-8 yrs & 9-12 yrs)

This class welcomes students who have completed a beginning ballet class. Ballet barre will be used to focus on alignment, placement and technique. Students will learn a variety of barre warm ups, incorporating and adding variations to movements previously learned to increase strength and flexibility. Center and across the floor combinations will be taught, incorporating new movements learned at barre. Clothing: Leotard, dance tights and ballet slippers. Skirt or shorts may be worn over tights.

Kindergarten Hip-Hop (4-5yrs)

This class teaches young students the basics of hip-hop. They will learn how to count, musicality, and rhythm, and will learn how to apply these new skills into movement in their bodies. Students will build endurance through fun exercises and increase their strength for different tricks and different hip-hop combinations. Clothing: Jazz pants, leggings, fitted top or leotard & tights; non-marking (not worn outside of class) jazz shoes or sneakers. Shorts may be worn over leggings or tights. NO JEANS

Beginning Hip Hop (6-8 yrs & 9-13 yrs)

In this class, beginning students will explore rhythms and sounds and how they translate in their body. They will learn basic steps to contemporary funk hip-hop music and popular songs heard on the radio, as well as learn how to count to musical beats of the song in the form called "dancers eight." Class will incorporate how to stay grounded, how to initiate isolations and fluid transitions, and how to string movement together to form a choreographic piece. Clothing: Jazz pants, leggings, fitted top or leotard & tights; non-marking (not worn outside of class) jazz shoes or sneakers. Shorts may be worn over leggings or tights. NO JEANS

Hip Hop/Modern Combo (6-8yrs & 9-14yrs)

In this class students will combine the basics of hip hop movement with the free expression of beginner, modern dance. They will learn fluid isolations, how to count music, as well as how to work to remember choreography. Students master how to keep rhythm in the body to both slower and faster paced songs. This energetic class will teach combinations to popular hit music as well as R&B styles. This is a great class for students with no prior dance experience; or students who already have taken a beginner hip hop or modern dance class. Clothing: Jazz pants, leggings, fitted top or leotard & tights; non-marking (not worn outside of class) jazz shoes or sneakers. Shorts may be worn over leggings or tights. NO JEANS

Hip Hop I (8-11yrs) & Hip Hop Intermediate (9-14yrs)

Hip Hop I is designed for students who have completed at least one dance class in the past. Hip Hop Intermediate is for students who have taken hip hop classes before. Both classes will continue movements learned in Beginning Hip Hop, but at a faster pace. Dancers will also begin to explore a mixture of fluid movements and isolations. Classes will introduce combinations that incorporate suspended movement, fast-paced combinations, and lyrical association to music. Rhythms and sound are emphasized. Clothing: Clothing: Jazz pants, leggings, fitted top or leotard & tights; non-marking (not worn outside of class) jazz shoes or sneakers. Shorts may be worn over leggings or tights. NO JEANS

This class introduces young students to the basics of jazz dance. Class begins with a warm up designed to show students the relationship between their bodies' alignment and dance movement. Students will see how dancers create shapes with body movement. They will learn how to count along with dance steps and the relationship of beat to movement.

Jazz/Tap Combo (6-10yrs)

This class will teach students basic tap terms and moves, training muscles for isolated foot moves, and class routine. Emphasis is placed on the importance of rhythm and clear sounds. Students will also learn the basics of jazz dance and see how dancers create shapes with body movement. Routines are choreographed to show students the relationship between their bodies' alignment and dance movement. Clothing: Jazz pants, leggings, fitted top or leotard & tights; black, low-heeled tap shoes & jazz shoes or non-marking (not worn outside of class) sneakers.

Modern/Ballet Combo (6-8yrs)

This class incorporates the fundamentals of ballet with the free flowing movements of lyrical modern, most widely known from Fox network's competition 'So You Think You Can Dance,' in which dancers tell a story with their bodies. Many basics of ballet and modern will be covered to prepare the dancer for their next class in either style. Clothing: Jazz pants, leggings, fitted top or leotard & tights. Shorts may be worn over leggings or tights.

Modern/Jazz Combo (9-14yrs)

This class is a fusion of modern dance, as seen in music videos & TV, with jazz dance that we often see on stage. Students will learn the basics of both modern & jazz and learn how dancers create shapes with body movement. Class begins with a warm up to improve strength, flexibility, posture & alignment. Routines are choreographed to show students the relationship between their bodies' alignment and dance movement. This class is fun for both beginners & those who have had some jazz or modern dance in the past. Clothing: Jazz pants, leggings, fitted top; non-marking (not worn outside of class) jazz shoes or sneakers. Shorts may be worn over leggings or tights.

Modern/Lyrical Combo (9-14yrs)

Lyrical Modern dance is most widely known from Fox network's competition 'So You Think You Can Dance,' in which the dancers tell a story with the free flowing movements of modern dance. This lyrical approach to modern dance showcases the dancer's unique abilities of movement and trains the dancer in techniques used in every form of dance, such as retention of choreography, bodily expression with or without music, extension, muscle awareness and choreographing techniques. Clothing: Jazz pants, leggings, fitted top or leotard & tights. Skirts or shorts may be worn over leggings or tights.

Musical Theater Intro (6-8 yrs & 9-14 yrs)

This class is an introduction to Musical Theater dancing, and it offers beginners dance terminology needed to succeed in any dance class. Students will learn combinations that integrate acting, singing and choreography to prepare them for musical theater productions. Dance numbers will be choreographed to songs from Broadway and Off Broadway Musicals. Clothing: Jazz pants, leggings, fitted top or leotard & tights; non-marking (not worn outside of class) jazz shoes or sneakers. Shorts may be worn over leggings or tights.

Musical Theater I (9-14yrs)

This class covers singing, stage presence & dance, as in intro to Musical Theatre, but at an advanced level & pace. It is designed for students who have already taken a musical theatre class. Dance numbers will be choreographed to songs from Broadway and Off Broadway Musicals. Clothing: Jazz pants, leggings, fitted top or leotard & tights; non-marking (not worn outside of class) jazz shoes or sneakers. Shorts may be worn over leggings or tights.

Kindergarten Tap (4-5 yrs)

This is a class for kindergarten children who are interested in exploring the fundamentals of tap. Students will get an introduction to the building blocks of tap terms, and will also practice the basic moves, training muscles for isolated foot moves, and class routine. Wearing proper dance clothes will make the class more fun and safe! Clothing: Jazz pants, leggings, fitted top or leotard & tights. Shorts may be worn over leggings or tights. Tap shoes will be used heavily in this course.*

Beginning Tap (6-10 yrs)

Students enrolled in this class will be introduced to the basic elements of tap dance technique and terminology. Emphasis is placed on the importance of rhythm and clear sounds, and students will be exposed to a variety of exercises and combinations that are designed to strengthen core muscles and improve balance. Clothing: Jazz pants, leggings, fitted top or leotard & tights; black, low-heeled tap shoes.*

*Our teachers recommend Capezio patent leather low-heeled taps for beginners. They are available at the Alaska Dancer Emporium, or online at http://www.capeziostore.com/Capezio-Jr-Tyette-p/n625.htm. They can usually be purchased for under $30. These shoes are a great deal price-wise, and they handle wear and tear very well. JEANS ARE NOT PERMITTED TO BE WORN IN ANY CLASS. Students wearing jeans will not participate in class—no exceptions.
